
The study compared the performance of nasopharyngeal antigen Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDTs), saliva RT-PCR, and nasopharyngeal (NP) RT-PCR for detecting SARS-CoV-2 in patients with symptoms of COVID-19. The detection rates were 35.2% for RDT, 39.8% for saliva PCR, and 40.1% for NP PCR. The sensitivity of RDT compared to NP PCR was 87.4%, with a specificity of 100%. For patients with a high viral load, sensitivity was 96.5%. The study found that RDTs can rapidly identify COVID-19 cases and could be a game changer in resource-constrained settings. Additionally, saliva PCR could replace NP swabbing when PCR is performed.
