A recent study in England involving 253 participants with recurrent non-affective psychotic disorders assessed the effects of gradual antipsychotic reduction versus maintenance treatment. The trial, known as RADAR, revealed that over 24 months, reducing antipsychotic doses did not impact social functioning. The reduction and maintenance groups showed no significant difference in the Social Functioning Scale scores. However, the reduction group experienced more serious adverse events, primarily mental health relapses leading to hospital admissions. These findings suggest that gradual antipsychotic reduction, though burdensome with adverse events, does not improve social functioning in the long term. The study provides valuable insights for decisions regarding long-term antipsychotic medication use.
