Aortic Stenosis Doubles Risk of Gastric Antral Vascular Ectasia

A study analyzed outcomes for hospitalized patients with gastric antral vascular ectasia (GAVE) and aortic stenosis (AS). The findings revealed that AS patients had a 2-fold increased risk of developing GAVE (odds ratio [OR]: 2.08, P < 0.001). While inpatient mortality was not significantly different between groups (OR: 1.36, P = 0.268), patients with GAVE and AS faced higher risks of hypovolemic shock (OR: 2.00, P = 0.001) and acute coronary syndromes (OR: 2.25, P < 0.001). The mean cost of care was increased by $4729 for GAVE-AS patients (P = 0.022), though length of hospital stay did not differ (P = 0.320). These results underscore the increased complications and resource use associated with GAVE in the context of AS.
