Appraising the causal relationship between plasma caffeine levels and neuropsychiatric disorders through Mendelian randomization

Increased plasma caffeine levels have been linked to altered odds of neuropsychiatric disorders in a Mendelian randomization study. The study analyzed genome-wide association data from European participants and identified associations between higher caffeine levels and heightened risk of anorexia nervosa while showing reduced odds of bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder. However, instrumented caffeine levels were not linked to schizophrenia risk. These findings suggest that elevated plasma caffeine might decrease bipolar disorder and MDD risk but raise anorexia nervosa risk.
