
Aquaporin (AQP) water channels regulate body water balance, primarily in the kidneys. However, recent research has shown that AQPs are also involved in water absorption and secretion in other organs, such as sweat glands, salivary glands, and the gastrointestinal tract. Notably, AQPs transport water and enable the movement of small molecules and gases like glycerol, H2O2, ions, and CO2. Additionally, AQPs contribute to cellular processes like migration, adhesion, and signalling pathways, affecting cell proliferation, apoptosis, and invasiveness. AQPs are highly expressed in various cancers and can influence cancer spread and response to chemotherapy.
