Are children with atopic eczema more likely than other children to develop serious internal infections?

As a background to this study it is known that children with atopic dermatitis (AD) have an increased risk of developing skin infections caused by bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus as well as viruses including herpes simplex. This then raises the question as to whether children with AD are, in addition, at greater risk from internal infections. In this Danish study the investigators used their national eczema registry, which was set up to record information on the progress of patients with eczema, in order to discover whether children with AD were more likely than non‐atopic children to have been hospitalized because of an infection other than one originating on the skin...
