Are the severity of obstruction and the apnea–hypopnea index related to orofacial anatomy in children with obstructive sleep apnea? a kinetic MRI study

A study investigated the relationship between anatomical characteristics and disease severity in children and adolescents with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The researchers analyzed MRI scans of 25 OSA patients aged 8 to 18 years. They found that circumferential, laterolateral, and anteroposterior obstructions were present in varying proportions of patients. Retroglossal obstructions were more prevalent than retropalatal obstructions. The study revealed that the maxillary basal width and retropalatal airway width were inversely proportional to OSA severity and obstruction. The findings suggest that widening these structures through targeted clinical treatments may have potential benefits. However, further research is necessary to explore the effectiveness of such interventions.
