Are you congested? a comparison of definitions between otolaryngologists and their patients

The study aimed to determine the differences in the understanding and interpretation of congestion-related symptoms between otolaryngology patients and clinicians. A questionnaire consisting of 16 common descriptors of congestion symptoms was completed by 349 patients and 40 otolaryngologists. The results showed that patients selected more terms (6.8) compared to clinicians (4.0) and had a broader interpretation of congestion, including pressure-related, mucus-related, and other symptoms. Clinicians focused more on obstruction-related symptoms. Geographic location did not significantly affect the perception of symptoms. These findings have important implications for counseling and communication between clinicians and patients regarding congestion symptoms.
