
Candida albicans, the predominant fungal species in the oral cavity, poses challenges due to drug resistance in antifungal treatments. To combat this, a study explored anti-virulence strategies using seven artemisinins. These compounds, including arteether, effectively inhibited hyphal development, a critical virulence factor, and reduced damage to oral cells. Arteether showed the strongest activity and impacted the fungus's energy metabolism. Moreover, artemisinins significantly reduced ATP and cAMP production, regulating the Ras1-cAMP-Efg1 pathway to hinder hyphal development. Importantly, arteether demonstrated promising results in murine oropharyngeal candidiasis models, offering potential against C. albicans infections.
