HLA-B27 is associated with autoinflammatory diseases, possibly by the presentation of pathogenic peptides to T cells. Researchers have now isolated T cell receptors (TCRs) with disease-specific β-chain sequences from individuals with ankylosing spondylitis or acute anterior uveitis. These BV9 β-chains were all paired with the AV21 α-chain, and the TCRs showed clonal expansion in the joint and eye. The TCRs bound to specific HLA-B*27:05-associated peptides that corresponded to several self-antigens and microbial antigens, enabling the identification of a shared motif in potentially arthritogenic peptides that are targeted by BV9 T cells.
