A study introduces a new approach to minimize bias in tuberculosis (TB) treatment trials. The approach, called Poor Treatment Response (PPTR), standardizes the criteria and procedures for assessing unfavorable treatment outcomes. The triggers for a PPTR event include positive smear or culture results, worsening signs or symptoms, and consideration of changing the treatment regimen. The study found that PPTR triggers were sensitive in detecting unfavorable TB outcomes. Compliance with PPTR procedures varied but was relatively high. The PPTR approach is valuable in reducing bias in unblinded noninferiority trials and emphasizes the importance of standardized outcome assessment processes.
