ASCO Update: Lung cancer pill cuts the risk of death by Half - Daily Excelsior

The results from a recent trial presented at the 2023 American Society of Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting revealed that a once-daily pill, osimertinib, halved the risk of death in patients with common lung cancer following tumor-removal surgery. The global study randomly assigned eligible patients to receive either osimertinib or placebo until disease recurrence. Among the primary analysis population, 85% of patients treated with osimertinib were alive at five years compared to 73% on placebo. In the overall trial population, 88% of osimertinib-treated patients were alive at five years compared to 78% on placebo. Osimertinib was found to reduce the risk of death by 51% compared to placebo. These results establish osimertinib as a promising adjuvant treatment for early-stage EGFR-mutated lung cancer, providing patients with improved long-term survival prospects.
