ASICON 2024 Conference in Kochi Advocates Comprehensive HIV Care to End AIDS in India

At the 15th national conference of the AIDS Society of India (ASICON 2024) in Kochi, experts emphasized that India has the potential to eradicate AIDS. The conference, themed 'Informs, Reforms, and Transforms HIV-care,' commenced on Friday. Dr. Ishwar Gilada, a pioneer in HIV awareness in India, stressed the importance of inclusive healthcare. Out of 24.67 lakh people living with HIV in India, 16.80 lakh are on antiretroviral therapy (ART), with 93% achieving viral suppression. The conference highlighted the need to focus on high-risk groups, including transgenders and homosexuals, and recommended the introduction of self-test HIV kits. Between 2010 and 2022, India witnessed a 42% decline in new infections and a 77% reduction in AIDS-related deaths, showcasing significant progress. Globally, the respective reductions were 38% and 51% during the same period.
