A recent study compared the effectiveness of aspiration versus chest drain for treating primary spontaneous pneumothorax (PSP). While aspiration had a lower immediate success rate in resolving the pneumothorax compared to chest drain insertion, the aspiration group reported lower pain scores and lower recurrence rates at one year. Recent studies suggest a conservative approach for minimally symptomatic patients, but symptomatic patients should still be offered aspiration or ambulatory management with a Heimlich valve. Upcoming trials will further explore the effectiveness of conservative management and early suction in PSP treatment.
