Assessing Postnatal Genetics and Neurodevelopment in Full-Term Infants with Severe Low Birth Weight of Non-Placental Origin

A recent study examined infants born at term with significantly low birth weight but no placental insufficiency or maternal hypertensive disorders. Out of 36,405 infants, 98 met the criteria. Genetic syndromes were identified in 11% of families, and 33% of the children exhibited neurodevelopmental impairments despite standard clinical exome sequencing and CNV analysis results. These findings emphasize the need for vigilance in the care of non-malformed, severely small-term infants.
