Assessing the integrity of executive functioning in chronic aphasia

This study investigated the integrity of executive functioning (EF) skills in individuals with different types and severities of aphasia by comparing the performances of persons with aphasia (PWA) and healthy controls on a broad range of verbal and nonverbal EF skills. The study found that most PWA demonstrated domain-general EF deficits, regardless of the severity of their language impairments. Individual-level analyses showed marked variability in EF performances within the aphasia group. The study highlights the importance of routinely evaluating EF in clinical practice to improve rehabilitation success for PWA.
