Assessment of longitudinal brain development using super‐resolution magnetic resonance imaging following fetal open spina bifida surgery

In this study, the researchers used advanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) techniques to investigate the impact of fetal surgery on brain development in fetuses with open spina bifida (OSB). They compared MRI images of 29 OSB fetuses before surgery, one week after surgery, and six weeks after surgery, with images from 36 normal fetuses. They measured various parameters related to brain volume, surface area, shape, and gyrification. The results showed that after fetal surgery, the ventricular volume and shape parameters of OSB fetuses were different from those of normal fetuses. The study suggests that fetal surgery for OSB may have neurocognitive implications for postnatal outcomes beyond its effects on cerebrospinal fluid circulation.
