Association Between Anxiety/Depression and Gastroesophageal Reflux

A recent study reveals a significant association between gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and common psychiatric conditions, particularly anxiety and depression. A systematic analysis of 36 studies encompassing 100 or more adults with GERD exposes alarming prevalence rates of anxiety (34.4%) and depression (24.2%). The bidirectional link is further supported by cohort studies demonstrating an increased risk of developing GERD or psychiatric symptoms. Additionally, Mendelian randomization studies emphasize a genetic predisposition for both GERD and mood disorders. This study sheds light on the complex interplay between mental health and gastrointestinal conditions, impacting up to one-third of GERD patients.
