Association between epicardial adipose tissue and cardiac dysfunction in subjects with severe obesity

A new study explores the link between epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) thickness and cardiac dysfunction in severely obese individuals without known CVD. The study enrolled 186 subjects with a body mass index (BMI) of ≥35 kg/m². The subjects were divided into tertiles based on EAT thickness, with EAT-3 (>5.4 mm) having the thickest EAT. While systolic and diastolic function parameters were similar among groups, EAT-3 individuals exhibited the lowest global longitudinal strain (GLS) and left atrial contractile strain (LASct). Linear regression revealed that increased EAT thickness was independently associated with decreased GLS and LASct, and EAT-3 predicted cardiac dysfunction. This research suggests that EAT may serve as an early marker for cardiac dysfunction in obesity, offering potential insights into prevention and management.
