New research conducted in Shanghai, China, has identified a potential link between a new metric called glycaemia risk index (GRI) and the development of diabetic retinopathy (DR) in individuals with type 2 diabetes. The findings revealed that higher GRI was associated with an increased risk of incident DR. For each 1-standard deviation increase in GRI, the risk of developing DR rose by 20%. The study suggests that GRI could become a valuable clinical tool, warranting further investigation.
