Association between self-reported mobile phone use and the semen quality of young men

A nationwide cross-sectional study involving 2886 men aged 18–22 investigated the association between mobile phone exposure and semen parameters. Participants provided semen samples and information on mobile phone usage. Higher mobile phone use (>20 times per day) was associated with lower sperm concentration and total sperm count (TSC). This translated to a 30% increased risk for low sperm concentration and a 21% increased risk for low TSC, compared to WHO reference values for fertile men. The inverse association decreased over time, possibly linked to changes in mobile phone technology. Keeping a mobile phone in the pants pocket showed no consistent association with lower semen parameters.
