Recent research has highlighted a concerning link between cognitive function and suicidality in young patients recently diagnosed with schizophrenia. A study involving 402 participants revealed that 52% reported suicidal ideation (SI). Those with SI were younger and had a longer duration of untreated psychosis (DUP). They also exhibited higher scores in depression, stress, and hopelessness measures while demonstrating better cognitive performance in various tests. These findings suggest that cognitive function is a significant risk factor for suicidality in schizophrenia patients, emphasizing the need for psychological support and cognitive interventions, especially in those with good cognitive function but high levels of depression and hopelessness.
