
A recent study examined the link between lipid-lowering drugs and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) risk using genetic analysis. Researchers studied 173,082 people of European ancestry and identified genetic markers for lipid-lowering drug targets. Inhibiting NPC1L1 was linked to higher IBD risk (OR: 2.31) and ulcerative colitis (UC) risk (OR: 2.40), confirmed in a validation group. Inhibiting low-density lipoprotein receptors was associated with lower IBD (OR: 0.72) and UC risk (OR: 0.74), though validation was inconclusive. Other drug targets didn't show significant IBD, UC, or Crohn's disease associations. These findings suggest NPC1L1 inhibition might raise IBD risk, especially for UC.
