Association of Apolipoprotein E Gene Polymorphism with Type 2 Diabetic Nephropathy in the Southern Chinese Population

The study investigated the association between apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene polymorphisms and diabetic nephropathy (DN) susceptibility in the southern Chinese Hakka population. Analyzing 306 DN patients and 483 type 2 diabetic controls, researchers identified significant differences in various factors. DN patients showed higher frequencies of the ϵ2 allele and E2/E3 genotype. Logistic regression showed the ϵ2 allele and E2/E3 genotype as independent risk factors, while the ϵ3 allele or E3/E3 genotype was potentially protective against DN. The findings suggest a correlation between APOE polymorphisms and DN risk in this population, highlighting the impact of specific genotypes on susceptibility.
