Association of fat mass and fat-free mass with all-cause and cause-specific mortality in Asian individuals

A study on the Chinese population examined the link between fat mass index (FMI) and fat-free mass index (FFMI) and mortality. Both very low and high FMI and FFMI levels increased all-cause mortality. Participants in extreme FMI quintiles had higher mortality risks (HR: 1.32 and 1.13) than those in the mid-range. Similar trends were seen in FFMI (HR: 1.14 and 1.16). Both FMI and FFMI displayed a J-shaped association with mortality. Notably, FFMI Q5 individuals had a lower risk (HR: 0.72) for respiratory disease. The study suggests mortality risk rises with excessively low or high FMI and FFMI, but outcomes vary among subgroups and causes of death.
