
In a study of 279 mother-infant pairs in the Philippines, the study explored the connection between placental issues and poor intrauterine growth. Maternal vascular malperfusion (MVM) was linked to lower birthweight, length, head circumference, and weight-to-length ratio, increasing the risk of preterm delivery and small for gestational age infants. Acute chorioamnionitis and MVM also raised the risk of fetal malnutrition. However, villous tissue with activated caspase-3 was associated with longer birth length, a better weight-to-length ratio, and reduced risks of being small for gestational age. These findings emphasize the role of placental health in fetal development and potential strategies to reduce poor intrauterine growth.
