Associations of early pregnancy serum uric acid levels with risk of gestational diabetes and birth outcomes

Elevated blood uric acid (UA) levels have been linked to adverse cardiovascular outcomes in pregnancy, but its impact on normotensive pregnant women remained unclear. A retrospective analysis of 18,250 mother-infant pairs in a Chinese obstetric center revealed that higher maternal UA levels in early pregnancy were associated with increased risks of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), preterm birth (PB), low birth weight (LBW), and small for gestational age (SGA). Hyperuricemia further intensified the risks of GDM and PB. These associations were more pronounced in women with higher body mass index. The study underscores the importance of monitoring UA levels for potential pregnancy complications in normotensive women.
