Atorvastatin, a cholesterol-lowering drug, was tested in a clinical trial involving 300 lymphoma patients receiving anthracycline-based chemotherapy. The study aimed to assess if atorvastatin could prevent cardiac dysfunction caused by anthracyclines. Participants were randomly given atorvastatin or placebo for 12 months. Results showed 15% of the atorvastatin group experienced ≥10% decline in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), compared to 22% in placebo. Atorvastatin also lowered the incidence of secondary LVEF decline (13% vs. 29% in placebo). Findings suggest atorvastatin could be beneficial for lymphoma patients at risk of cardiac dysfunction due to anthracyclines.
