Audit of Ireland's first manual vacuum aspiration service

The study evaluated the efficacy and safety of manual vacuum aspiration (MVA) for first-trimester miscarriage, termination of pregnancy, or retained pregnancy tissue. The study analyzed data from 86 women who underwent MVA. They found that 98.8% of the procedures were successfully completed without complications or the need for emergency interventions. The incomplete evacuation rate was 4.7%. The study concludes that MVA is a safe and effective option, providing benefits for patients and the healthcare system. The study recommends expanding MVA services nationally to offer women more choices in managing early pregnancy complications and terminations.
