Baricitinib Surpasses Traditional Treatments for Severe Alopecia Areata

Baricitinib demonstrated superior efficacy over traditional treatments for severe alopecia areata in a retrospective analysis of 75 patients treated between July 2021 and July 2023. At 6 months, 32% and 26% of baricitinib-treated patients achieved SALT ≤ 20 and SALT ≤ 10, respectively, compared to 12% and 9% in the groups receiving topical immunomodulators or traditional immunosuppressants. Baricitinib also resulted in greater SALT reductions of 50% and 90% from baseline. While mild-to-moderate side effects were noted across all groups, weight gain, affecting 16% of patients treated with baricitinib, emerged as a unique concern. This analysis highlights baricitinib's potential as a more effective treatment option for severe alopecia areata, albeit with specific safety considerations.
