
A study investigated the relationship between baseline Reticular Basement Membrane (RBM) thickness and subsequent spirometry in children with allergic bronchial asthma (BA), cystic fibrosis (CF), and primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD). They measured RBM thickness and spirometry parameters in a cohort of patients and controls. The results showed that RBM was thicker in BA, CF, and PCD compared to controls. The lung clearance index (LCI) was higher in CF and PCD. Follow-up data revealed a significant decline in spirometry parameters in BA, CF, and PCD groups, but not in controls. It was found that RBM thickness and ventilation inhomogeneity predicted trends in spirometry. Overall, baseline LCI value and RBM morphology could potentially predict future spirometry outcomes.
