Biodegradable Polymer Stents Outperform Durable Ones in Heart Attack Patients

Biodegradable polymer sirolimus-eluting stents have been shown to offer better early clinical outcomes than durable polymer everolimus-eluting stents for patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention. However, the long-term benefits of these biodegradable stents, once the polymer coating degrades, are still uncertain. In a study involving 1300 STEMI patients, the biodegradable polymer stents demonstrated a lower risk of target lesion failure at 5 years compared to the durable polymer stents (8% vs. 11%). These findings suggest the potential long-term advantages of biodegradable stents in improving patient outcomes after STEMI.
