Biometric description of 34 589 eyes undergoing cataract surgery: sex differences

A study at Miguel Servet University Hospital in Spain analyzed gender differences in biometric parameters of cataract patients. Involving 34,589 eyes from 20,004 patients, significant differences were observed between sexes, including shorter eye length and steeper anterior keratometries in women. The intraocular lens (IOL) power distribution also varied by gender, suggesting women require more powerful lenses. These findings underscore the potential benefit of considering gender in IOL calculations to enhance surgical outcomes and assist in better hospital stock planning for IOLs.
