Blebs signal survival

Blebs signal survival

The study shows that when adherent cells are deprived of attachment, they form surface blebs, and rounded plasma membrane protrusions that can signal survival. These blebs are maintained for 1-2 hours, but if the attachment is not restored, cells undergo detachment-induced programmed cell death called anoikis. Cancer cells are resistant to anoikis and can maintain a blebbing phenotype indefinitely, which is frequently observed at the tumour invasive front. The study identifies blebs as potent signalling organelles that mediate anoikis resistance.
