Both moderate- and high-intensity exercise training increase intramyocellular lipid droplet abundance and modify myocellular distribution in adults with obesity

A recent study explored the impact of exercise training on lipid metabolism in skeletal muscle among adults with obesity. The study compared high-intensity interval training (HIIT) to moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT). Both HIIT and MICT significantly increased intramyocellular lipid content by over 50%, primarily due to a greater number of lipid droplets (LDs) in the intramyofibrillar region of muscle fibers. Additionally, the study suggested a transient upregulation of LD lipophagy, the autophagy-mediated LD degradation, the day after exercise. This research sheds light on how exercise programs impact lipid abundance in skeletal muscle, enhancing energy production during workouts in obese individuals.
