The study investigated the expression of Bovine Milk and Meat Factors (BMMFs) in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients and found that the expression of BMMF replication protein (Rep) is increased in tumor-adjacent mucosa compared to the tumor and mucosa of healthy donors. This suggests that BMMFs are involved in inflammation-driven, indirect carcinogenesis of CRC. The study also found that Rep expression persists even after resection and therapy, which might favor ongoing chronic inflammation, tumor recurrence, and metastasis. Rep expression might, therefore, serve as a prognostic marker for CRC. The correlation between Rep expression and macrophage expression supports the hypothesis that BMMF-specific inflammatory regulations, including macrophages, are involved in the pathogenesis of CRC. The study suggests that BMMF Rep expression might represent an early risk factor for CRC.
