Burdens and trends of blindness and vision loss among those aged 55 years and older

A systematic analysis using data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 reveals concerning trends in blindness and vision loss among individuals aged ≥55 years from 1990 to 2019, with predictions for 2030. In 2019, global prevalence reached 471.1 million cases with 15.9 million disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), projected to rise to 640.3 million cases and 18.9 million DALYs by 2030. While prevalence rates increased, DALY rates decreased, suggesting a changing disease landscape. Cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and near vision loss exhibited rising trends, particularly impacting women and low Socio-demographic Index regions, underscoring significant public health challenges.
