Cardiac and kidney benefits of empagliflozin in heart failure across the spectrum of kidney function

The study examined the effect of empagliflozin on cardiovascular and kidney outcomes in patients with heart failure (HF) with preserved ejection fraction, categorized by the presence or absence of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The study found that empagliflozin reduced the primary outcome of cardiovascular death or first HF hospitalization and total hospitalizations for HF and slowed the decline of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) irrespective of CKD status. Empagliflozin did not reduce the pre-specified kidney outcome but slowed the progression to macroalbuminuria and reduced the risk of acute kidney injury. The benefits and safety of empagliflozin were consistent across a wide range of kidney function spectrums.
