Carotid Atherosclerosis and Mortality Risk in Diabetes

A study involving 3628 individuals with type 2 diabetes investigated the impact of carotid atherosclerosis markers on mortality after considering glucose variation (GV). They found that markers such as intima–media thickness (IMT), plaque, and stenosis were significant predictors of all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality when GV was considered. Furthermore, IMT and carotid stenosis mediated the association between GV and mortality outcomes. These findings highlight the importance of considering carotid atherosclerosis markers in assessing mortality risk among individuals with type 2 diabetes.
