The study introduces the concept of "cathartic dreams," a type of emotional dream that involves a dynamic plot where negative emotions are expressed and ultimately reduced, providing psychological relief. A tool using a large language model was developed to categorize dreams from dream diaries, detecting the prevalence of cathartic dreams in both healthy participants and patients with nightmares. The research found that cathartic dreams increased during imagery rehearsal therapy and targeted memory reactivation, with a significant correlation to reduced depression scores in patients. These findings support the functional role of cathartic dreams in emotional well-being.
