The study investigated the causal relationships between sleep apnea, snoring, and type 2 diabetes while assessing the role of BMI in the pathway using multiple genetic methods. The findings suggested that the association between sleep apnea, snoring, and type 2 diabetes is mainly driven by BMI, with BMI accounting for 67% and 62% of the total effect of sleep apnea and snoring, respectively. In addition, the study suggests that the indirect effects of sleep apnea and snoring on type 2 diabetes through BMI cannot be ruled out.
