Cause-specific mortality by county, race, and ethnicity in the USA, 2000–19: a systematic analysis of health disparities

Racial-ethnic disparities in US mortality and their variation by location and cause of death were studied from 2000 to 2019. Mortality rates were higher for American Indian/Alaska Native and Black populations, lower for Asian and Latino populations, across various causes. Patterns varied by cause, with exceptions. Geographic differences existed overall and within groups. National disparities mirrored county-level gaps, particularly for skin diseases, HIV/AIDS, and more. Widespread disparities in mortality underscore structural issues needing immediate attention. The study highlights the complexity of racial-ethnic disparities in mortality, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions to address these disparities.
