CEACAM6: A Novel Marker of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Susceptibility?

Wu and colleagues conducted a series of studies to investigate the role of nitrosative stress in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and its potential as a therapeutic target. They found that levels of a marker of nitrosative stress, called 3-NT, correlated with disease severity in COPD patients. The researchers also discovered that cells resistant to cigarette smoke extract had low levels of nitrosative stress markers and high levels of the antioxidant enzyme HO-1. The resistant state depended on HO-1, and its protective effect was hindered by a molecule called CEACAM6. They observed elevated CEACAM6 expression in COPD patients and suggested it could serve as a biomarker and potential therapeutic target. Further research is needed to explore the therapeutic potential of CEACAM6-blocking antibodies in COPD treatment.
