Cellular Mechanisms of Insulin Resistance in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Insulin resistance, a key feature of type 2 diabetes, impairs insulin action, reducing glucose control while preserving lipid synthesis and lipoprotein secretion. The review discusses molecular and physiological mechanisms of insulin resistance, focusing on hyperinsulinaemia and its implications. It highlights the challenges and prospects for selective insulin sensitization therapies, such as inhibiting FOXO1 or activating PPARγ. Future therapies could modify the disease course and prevent progression.
