Cellular stress in the pathogenesis of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis and liver fibrosis

Chronic liver disease is on the rise globally, posing a significant health challenge. The progression to cirrhosis, primarily driven by fibrosis characterized by excessive extracellular matrix protein accumulation, offers limited treatment options. Emerging research underscores the crucial role of cellular stress responses in fibrogenesis. This review explores studies examining cellular stress's impact on various cell types contributing to fibrogenesis, such as hepatocytes, hepatic stellate cells, liver sinusoidal endothelial cells, and macrophages.
