Central STN-dDBS significantly enhances gait and balance in Parkinson’s patients, reducing Freezing of Gait (FOG) episodes. In a randomized study of 10 participants with severe FOG, central STN stimulation outperformed posterior stimulation and ring-mode DBS. The research suggests reprogramming DBS towards the central STN could offer a superior option for treating gait and balance disorders, including FOG and postural instability, in selected patients post-surgery.
