The study evaluates a centrifugal mechanical circulatory support (MCS) device for heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), focusing on hemocompatibility at low flow rates (0.05–0.5 L/min). Using computational fluid dynamics, blood trauma was assessed through hemolysis index and turbulent dissipation energy metrics. The results indicate that the device's hemolysis index is comparable to HVAD pumps, with a rate of 0.0036 at 1 L/min and 3000 rpm. Design modifications—specifically thinner impeller blades and a smaller impeller diameter—yielded notable improvements, achieving a 12% reduction in hemolysis and reducing trauma by 2.8 times at 0.5 L/min. These findings suggest the potential for safer HFpEF treatment, pending experimental validation.
