Childhood Maltreatment, Mentalization, and NSSI Risk in Youth

Childhood emotional abuse significantly affects non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) risk. In a study with 1,645 youths, mentalization and depression mediated the relationship between emotional abuse and NSSI risk. While physical abuse showed a direct effect, other forms of maltreatment, like sexual abuse, did not. This highlights the importance of targeting mentalization improvement in interventions, especially for emotional abuse, to reduce NSSI risk.
