
In a double-blinded crossover study with 12 healthy subjects, 14 nights of intermittent hypoxia significantly increased sympathetic nerve activity (p = 0.04) and reduced free fatty acid sensitivity to insulin (p = 0.028). Adipose tissue showed increased expression of lipolysis and lipogenesis genes. These findings suggest that hypoxia-induced metabolic shifts may contribute to insulin resistance in obstructive sleep apnea patients.
