Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is an independent risk factor for increased opioid use in total hip arthroplasty

Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a common surgical procedure with high success rates, but a new study highlights the increased risk for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). A retrospective analysis of Medicare patients who had THA showed COPD patients had significantly higher rates of opioid usage and experienced more complications, including readmissions and revisions. This study emphasizes the need for better screening, counseling, and post-operative pain management for COPD patients undergoing THA.
